This artwork depicts Umi-No-Kami, Guardian of all Fishes and Mollusks, attacking the US Pacific Fleet and several oil rigs near the island of Guam. The giant fish-like kaiju originally emerged in the Mariana Trench, from where it rose to the surface of the Pacific Ocean and annihilated cities in Japan, the Philippines, China, and Southeast Asia, before moving on to the small islands of the Pacific. Inevitably it drew the attention of the US government, whose military was stationed in Japan, Guam, and other islands, so it sent the force of its Navy to counter the threat. Unfortunately, the military knew very little about Umi-No-Kami's true abilities: not only was it capable of generating tidal waves and flooding coastal regions with its sheer size, but it could swallow aircraft carries in a single gulp, command an army of aquatic creatures to drag down smaller ships, and destroy electronics, cause city-wide blackouts, or jam communications equipment with its electric organs (more powerful than those present in electric eels).
